NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, did not confirm his residency plans right away following his victory in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change there, the community will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Political Debate

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

But his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.

The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
