UN Ends Sanctions on Syrian President Prior to White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to an American proposal removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his presidential meeting the coming week.

He was appointed provisional head of state following his leadership in a rebel offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, ending over a decade of domestic strife.

The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.

He had been subject to United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Islamist group HTS, once connected to the terrorist network. America delisted the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations during July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of these restrictions, posting on social media: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and supportive states for assisting of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week comes after President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

After the meeting, the US president stated Sharaa had "a real shot at pulling it together".

Both presidents held discussions for the first time in May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria prior to breaking relations in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit is not Sharaa's first trip to America in the current year. In September, he became the first Syrian leader to address the United Nations gathering in Manhattan in almost 60 years.

In his speech, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position within the global community" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.

  • President Sharaa presents to international community for first time in almost 60 years
  • The high-level talks with President Sharaa, unthinkable just months ago, elevates national expectations
