UK Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Advisory List with 11 Nations
The UK government has placed 11 more countries to its public alert roster concerning the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.
The expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "an international surge in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol toxicity.
Just last month, officials had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, following multiple high-profile cases including the fatal death of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?
Industrial alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol commonly utilized in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not meant for drinking.
While it is naturally produced during the creation of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the distillation process.
But in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to save money, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to identify.
Authorities' Guidance for Tourists
Authorities minister the minister said that every traveler should know the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"While drinking spirits overseas, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer said.
"Should anything appears suspicious, like a hangover that's way worse than usual or vision problems ā get medical help fast."
The full roster of destinations listed as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
