The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, though additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
