The Israeli Premier League rivalry match between one local team and Hapoel Tel Aviv was called off ahead of the start on Sunday, following what authorities characterized as "civil unrest and major clashes".
"Many of smoke bombs and flares were set off," law enforcement stated on online platforms, noting "this isn't a sporting event, it represents unrest and significant aggression".
Twelve individuals and multiple officers were harmed, officials confirmed, while nine people were arrested and numerous others questioned by police.
The clashes occur just days after officials in the United Kingdom stated that Maccabi Tel Aviv fans cannot be permitted to attend the Europa League match at the English club in Britain the following month because of safety concerns.
One team condemned the match postponement, claiming Israeli police of "getting ready for a war, instead of a football match", particularly during talks in the build-up to the eagerly-awaited match.
"The alarming situations around the arena and following the irresponsible and outrageous ruling to abandon the game only show that the Israel Police has taken control of the game," Hapoel Tel Aviv said in a statement.
Their rivals has remained silent, only acknowledging the game was called off.
The ruling by the local safety committee to exclude the team's supporters from the Birmingham game on the sixth of November has provoked widespread criticism.
The British authorities has subsequently stated it is working to overturn the ban and exploring what further support might be required to make certain the fixture can be hosted safely.
Aston Villa notified their stadium staff that they did not have to work at the fixture, saying they acknowledged that some "could be worried".
On Thursday, law enforcement confirmed it backed the ban and designated the game as "concerning" according to reports and previous incidents.
That encompassed "serious fights and discrimination incidents" among Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv fans prior to a match in Amsterdam in late 2024, when more than 60 people were taken into custody.
There have been demonstrations at various sporting events over the war in Gaza, for instance when the national team played the Scandinavian team and the European team in latest qualification games.
