Teenager Found Dead Following False Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One 14-year-old boy was discovered deceased just days following being falsely blamed of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's parents found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.
False Allegations Start
The inquest heard how his parent got a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her child. The message stated: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."
In a statement read to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the media, asserting her baby's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was false.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from police later concluded the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the items was never taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the alleged stolen remains attracted online comments, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "online posts were really upsetting", she said.
Mental Health Impact
She explained that Kai had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was arrested at home, but no evidence was found. He was taken to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Anxiety
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could seem like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her child informed her he had entered the house because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he wanted, but denied removing anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The inquest learned that a young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "caring, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is completely devastated".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she said, noting that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Reaction
The hearing heard from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On November 8th, she "heard some boys talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she added.
After the conversation, the educator said she rang Kai's parents' landline and left a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the accusations.
The proceedings learned his parents said they never receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Lead coroner told the inquest he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with individuals with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a young child.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the medium of social media.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and after his interview he was freed while inquiries proceeded."
The official determined: "There is no evidence that the actions or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal act it is not possible to discern his intent."
