Selfies along with Melodies as Ethiopian Citizens Observe Annual Thanksgiving
A multitude of vibrantly dressed Ethiopians gathered in downtown Addis Ababa for the annual Irreecha event over the past days.
This thanksgiving celebration is honored by the Oromo people, the biggest population group, and occurs at the conclusion of the country's major rainy season.
Each year, festival-goers assemble around holy water bodies to give thanks to their creators for the fertile landscape that the rainy season have delivered.
"I have participated in Irreecha for the previous nine years," mentioned young adult a participant.
"For me, this event symbolizes my cultural background, it showcases the pride and importance of my ethnic group."
Males, females, the senior citizens and the young all take part, adorned in striking garments and accessories.
They chant, move rhythmically, share stories and place newly gathered grass and blossoms in liquid - representing existence, renewal and aspiration.
Global Attendance
The celebration not only draws individuals from across Ethiopia, guests travel from globally.
"I visited last year - the experience was amazing, so magnificent, I brought my offspring with me now," mentioned Claire, from Belfast in Northern Ireland.
"It is amazing. Everyone wants to say hello, each person wants to give you a kiss and expresses hospitality."
Celebration Schedule
The opening day of the festival was held on Saturday in Addis Ababa. On Sunday, participants travelled to a nearby town, a small town just outside the capital.
Although Irreecha has its foundations in traditional beliefs, it is now celebrated by the majority of the community, irrespective of their religion.
Contemporary Trends
In the past decade, the quantity of individuals participating in the festival has increased dramatically. This is partly due to the expansion of online networks, where numerous younger generation capture their clothing, dance moves and singing during the festival.
Previous Significance
In the earlier times, this event was used as a venue for anti-government protests - the Oromo community have long complained about systemic disadvantages.
